Dates:  1959- March 31, 2022

The Tragedy:

Lieutenant William Lebo lost his life while responding to a domestic-related burglary incident on March 31, 2022, in Pennsylvania. The homeowners had returned and discovered that a distressed family member had broken into their residence and was still inside when law enforcement arrived. As the response team entered the premises, the individual, armed with a handgun, opened fire, striking Lieutenant Lebo and two other officers.

Despite their injuries, the officers returned fire, ultimately neutralizing the suspect, who was later announced deceased within the house. Lieutenant Lebo was rushed to a nearby hospital but was tragically pronounced dead.

Having dedicated an impressive forty years of service to the Lebanon City Police Department, Lieutenant Lebo was just thirty days away from his retirement.

The Service:

Lieutenant Lebo was honored at the Giant Center on April 8, 2022, following a procession from the Christman Funeral home. The streets were lined with community members paying their respects.

William, often called Bill, was married to Lora Lebo who delivered a eulogy along with Lebanon police Lt. Eric Sims. Lora shared their story of how on their first date, 24 years after they met in seventh grade, Bill asked her to marry him. “I just knew he was my person. I was blessed to have fourteen years. He was my everything,” said Lora.

Sims, who had Lebo as a mentor, shared stories of Lebo at work. He was known to bring his platoon out to eat and always pay the bill, he was never seen without his police cap, and prioritized creating a relationship with the community.

Bob Bowman, longtime coworker and friend of Lebo, said “Being a police officer is a calling, it’s not a job, it’s a whole lifestyle. It’s something that never goes away even when you retire. He fulfilled that calling and lifestyle as a police officer should.”
