The Tragedy:
Chief Deputy Jody Cash’s life was taken in a shooting incident that occurred in front of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office on May 16, 2022. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office Incident Response Team apprehended a suspect with outstanding warrants. While at the Sheriff’s office, Deputy Cash and another deputy interviewed the man. During a requested smoke break, the deputies escorted the prisoner outside along with a third deputy. The prisoner produced a concealed handgun and fired at Deputy Cash, causing fatal injuries. The two other deputies acted quickly, returning fire, and ultimately killing the prisoner.
Chief Deputy Cash was taken to Marshall County Hospital but was unable to recover from his wounds. He served for 1-1/2 years with the Calloway Country Sheriff’s Office, eight years with the Kentucky State Police, six years as the Assistant Chief of the Murray State University Police Department, and another six years with the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office. He is survived by his wife and two children.

The Service:
Chief Deputy Cash was honored on May 21, at the CFSB Center at Murray State University and was laid to raid at the Murray City Cemetery.
Hundreds gathered to pay their respects as he had “a thousand best friends,” said Joey Adair. “We would do him a great disservice to him today if he were here and we didn’t laugh.” Nathan Kent, Chief of Mayfield Police, addressed Cash’s two children, “Jody taught you kids to be genuine. Not everybody is. He was. Your dad is a man of character, and we should all be so lucky to have that said about us.”

The Justice:
The man who shot Chief Deputy Cash was identified as Gary Rowland who had been arrested for outstanding warrants. After the incident personnel on scene attempted to save both Cash and Rowland and both were transported to Marshall County Hospital where they were pronounced deceased.
It was later discovered that a second individual, identified as Denise Collins, snuck Rowland the firearm used in the incident. She has been sentenced to 18 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. There is no option for parole.
